A typical horse weighing approximately 1000-1200 pounds would need: Food is measured by body weight and exercise: 1/2% of feed for maintenance, 3/4% for light exercise, 1% for heavy exercise

2 flakes of hay per day or approx. one bale of hay per five days (grass hay is usually two times more)
Drinks 10-15 gallons of water in an idle day, double with exercise and triple with head of the day and exercise.
Uses between 4-8 bags of shavings (10 cubic foot bags) per week
Free-choice usage of salt available at all times of the day
